The Process Behind Shallots
1. Plantation
Firstly, the selection of soil types is important before planting the shallots, the soil must be at least has the acidity between 6-6.5 PH and must be fulfill the requirement of the standard land elevation.
After that, plowing process for loosening the soil before given it with basic fertilizer is required, such as manure. The next process is to install the plastic mulch, this process is to improve the cultivation of shallots.
2. Pick The Best Quality (Superior) Seeds
Our farmer always choose the best quality seeds, “West sumatera seeds”
This shallot has the advantages of dense leaves, many tubers, large and arises at the surface of the soil, red in content and a shorter planting period than other varieties.
The most important one is the smell is more fragrant, and the color is more attractive, bright and fresh red. At a glance it looks like a red onion from India, and one clump of up to 7 seeds with super size.
3. Harvest
Ready-to-harvest shallots are indicated by the rising of the onion bulbs to the surface and the leeks that have fallen.
The next process is place the onion on a plastic mulch and let it sit for a few hours. Finally, Shallots are tied up and ready to brought to the warehouse.
4. Storage Area
Shallots are on the dry and storage area and the temperature must be between 27-30°C to keep the quality of the shallots.
5. Final Sorting and Packaging
Cleaning shallots is an activity to remove dirt attached to tubers such as soil and roots.
Sorting is separating the good tubers from the bad ones.
Grading is separating the large and small tubers according to the size of the class and of good quality.
Finally is packaging depends on the buyer needs.
